History of the museum

Museum history, visions and missions

The Croatian Museum of Tourism is a specialized museum institution of the national level that collects, preserves, researches and presents the tangible and intangible heritage of tourist content.

The founders of the Croatian Museum of Tourism are the City of Opatija and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, and the decree on its establishment was passed on September 7, 2007. Villa Angiolina, the oldest villa in Opatija, is located in the central park of Opatija, and it is the seat of the Museum and space for museum exhibitions.

We see the Croatian Museum of Tourism as an open, modern institution that encourages citizens to participate creatively and critically, and artists, intellectuals and others to projects. We want to create an institution that is educational in a way that asks questions and suggests research answers – it offers children a space where they can learn in a fun way. We also want to collaborate with other institutions, artists and individuals from all over Croatia and abroad by realizing joint projects that question the relationship between tourism and culture and the local community then and today and analyzing the good and bad trends of this interaction.

The mission of the Croatian Museum of Tourism is: collecting tangible and intangible material from the tourist history of Opatija and Croatia and updating that history today through exhibitions, workshops, round tables and research that open new perspectives on the interaction of tourism, local community and culture. social relations and trends.
