Bad Ischl Through the Eyes of Voljen Grbac

Bad Ischl Through the Eyes of Voljen Grbac

The exhibition Bad Ischl Through the Eyes of Voljen Grbac, organized by the Croatian Museum of Tourism, was opened opened at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19th of 2011 at the Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion in Opatija.

The emperor Franz Joseph I spent his summers in Bad Ischl for sixty years. That was where he also celebrated his engagement with Sissi, the future empress Elizabeth.

Although this town has a long history and is first mentioned as early as the 13th century, Bad Ischl is most well-known for being the Emperors summer residence and an Austrian health resort. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that it has recently developed both official and friendly ties to Opatija.

Photographs by opera tenor and popular singer Voljen Grbac also encourage inevitable comparisons between Opatija and Bad Ischl.

Grbac did not take typical photographs and photo-document Bad Ischl; he took photographic impressions. Impression is the most accurate term to use for his ‘lightscapes’, created as a result of momentary observation. Like the famous summer resort itself, they intentionally focus on the attractive details and avoid wide views and landscapes. They offer some things, hide others. The main goal of this exhibition is to bring a friendly city closed to the people of Opatija and it has no unrealistic pretentions to show everything.

Many of those who have never visited Bad Ischl will certainly be inspired to do so by this exhibition.

The exhibition will remain open until April 24th of 2011.
