Chawan – the Noble Teacup

Chawan – the Noble Teacup

The international center for ceramics Janja Gora Atelier and the Croatian Museum of Tourism are preparing the international exhibition Chawan – the Noble Teacup for September of 2011.

The exhibition is part of the international project ChawanEXPO, initiated in 2005 with the purpose of promoting Far Eastern techniques of making and decorating teacups. CHAWAN teacups are made by Japanese ZEN masters as works of art utilized during the traditional tea ceremony ritual.

The Chawan Exhibition was shown in Belgium in 2005, and by the end of 2010 it visited France, Holland and South Korea. The longtime participant and co organizer of this project, Janja Gora Atelier, was awarded the privilege of organizing this exhibition at the Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion.

The Croatian Museum of Tourism is participating in this project that will present visitors with the cultural heritage of the Far East as well as make a fine addition to Opatija’s cultural scene.

Chawan (茶碗) is the name of a cup used for making and drinking macha tea (green powdered tea) during the Japanese tea ceremony, dating from the 16th century. This modest cup represents the heart of Zen philosophy – everything in the universe is interconnected and created from the same matter. Everything deserves respect and every Chawan becomes a unique piece of art.

The exhibition will remain open until September 9th of 2011.
