Numerous visitors gathered at the art pavilion Juraj Šporer in Opatija on June 16th for the opening of the exhibition about Ivan Vučetić. This Hvar native, born 150 years ago, left for Argentina as a young man and was recorded in the history of criminology as the founder of fingerprint identification. According to Vitomir Bijelić, the head of the Crime police department in Rijeka, this is still the most reliable method of identification.
Most of the credit for this exceptionally interesting and inspirational multimedia concept exhibition goes to its author, Ljerka Galic, as well as the Croatian Heritage Foundation. This exhibition is an opportunity for the Croatian public to become more acquainted with this Croatian expat whose accomplishments are recognized around the world and in his homeland.
What sets this exhibition apart is its educational component. Jasna Matković from the Ivan Vučetić forensic centre in Zagreb explained the basics of dactyloscopy. The possibility of putting one’s own print on a commemorative card created great.
The mayor of Opatija, Dr. Amir Muzur, expressed his satisfaction that Opatija, along with other Croatian cities, was given the opportunity to host this exhibition. The exhibition was open in Opatija until June 26, and then it was moved to Trieste, Hvar and Split.
