Krešimir Zimonić: Comics and Illustrations

The exhibition Krešimir Zimonić: Comics and Illustrations, organized by the Croatian Museum of Tourism, was opened at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 14th of 2011 at the Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion in Opatija.

Krešimir Zimonić is one of the most appreciated Croatian comic book artists, as well as the most distinguished representative of the younger generation of the Zagreb School of Animation. He has been continuously publishing illustrations and comics since the middle of the 1970s. He has been working in animation professionally since 1979 and has been directing independently since 1983. He has been an independent artist since 1981.

He was born in 1956 in Đurđenovac. He finished elementary school in Vinkovci, and then attended the School of Applied Arts in Zagreb. He studied at the Art Academy in Zagreb, where he has been teaching at the Animation and Multimedia Department since 2002. In 2007, he was elected as the art director for the World Festival of Animation (Animafest) and he also works for Zagreb Film as an art director.

Krešimir Zimonić is the author of Zlatka, a comic book character that was extremely popular with generations of readers and is considered to be one of the anthological characters of Croatian comics. Zlatka was created during his long, successful collaboration with the youth magazine Modra lasta.

Besides publishing four collections of comics, Zimonić has also illustrated some twenty books, authored numerous posters, catalogues and texts on comics and animation and shown his work in group and individual exhibitions. He was the artistic producer at Zagreb Film, as well as the editor-in-chief of Patak magazine, the only magazine that published only Croatian comics. He is on of the founders, as well as the artistic director of the Salon of Comics in Vinkovci. He has worked as the artistic director of Modra lasta and a professor at the Art Academy. Zimonić was awarded numerous prizes for his comics and animated films. In the year 2000 he received the medal of the Order of the Croatian Morning Star with the likeness of Marko Marulić for special merit in culture.

The exhibition will be open until February 6th of 2011.
