Tomo Gerić: Nude Bathers

The exhibition Tomo Gerić: Nude Bathers, organized by the Croatian Museum of Tourism, will be opened at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 28th of 2010 at the Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion in Opatija.

The image of the naked human body mirrors the aesthetic and spiritual aspect of the social landscape. In some stylistic periods, it was favored and glorified, while it had negative connotations and was repressed and banned in other times. Painting and modeling nudes is always a challenge, an intrigue and a demonstration of the artist’s craft.

Since the 1970s, Tomo Gerić has been engrossed with the naked human body as the ideal and bottomless source of inspiration that he always comes back to. This exhibition is the first time that his nude bathers cycle has been shown in full. The human nude has really been laid bare in the wealth of the author’s studies, hundreds of sketches, sculptures and combined technique paintings.

The pluralism of the author’s artistic approach to the ideal Arcadian model – the human body, has confirmed its perfection and defined it as a perpetual holy object in art.

Tomo Gerić was born in 1933 in Vrbanovec. He graduated from the Art Academy in Zagreb in 1957, in the class of Professor Oton Postružnik. He has worked as an independent artist – painter, sculptor, graphic artist and ceramist. His works were shown in numerous independent and group exhibitions and he has received a number of awards and acknowledgements.
