On the occasion of International Museum Day (May 18), the Croatian Museum of Tourism is hosting a guest exhibition from the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb titled “Croatian Intangible Cultural Heritage on UNESCO’s Lists“.
The exhibition was initiated in 2011 by the Ministry of Culture (and Media) of the Republic of Croatia, organized and executed by the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb, and realized thanks to the results of many years of work by numerous experts. These experts, in collaboration with local communities and bearers of traditional knowledge and skills, have successfully nominated twenty-one cultural phenomena from the Republic of Croatia to three of UNESCO’s international lists of the world’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity from 2009 to the present day. The exhibition has achieved great success, visiting a total of 44 locations in 15 countries (Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, France, Lithuania, Poland, Malta, Bulgaria, Australia, Canada, China, and Turkmenistan), and has attracted more than half a million visitors. In 2023, it was redesigned into several versions.
To date, the Republic of Croatia has successfully nominated 22 cultural phenomena to UNESCO’s lists. The exhibition affirmatively presents 21 phenomena through photographs (ranging from documentary field shots, materials recorded by the heritage bearers themselves, to professional studio photographs), accompanying texts, and a QR code through which visitors can access the nomination film on UNESCO’s official YouTube channel. Meanwhile, a soundscape composed of ten traditional songs performed by the LADO Ensemble is played in the exhibition space.
The opening of the exhibition was enhanced by the Halubajski Bell Ringers from Viškovo.
