Villa Angiolina

Villa Angiolina is one of the oldest structures in Opatija and the most beautiful residential villa in town. It is of the palladium type with the historicist architectural design of the Neo-Renaissance vocabulary. A park that surrounds it is a famous arboretum which carries a significant horticultural legacy. Comfortably situated between villa’s entrance and the seaside is park’s lovely flower rotunda. The entrance is lavishly decorated with stucco (friezes, garlands), neo-Corinthian pillars, painted in zoomorphic and vegetable illusionist paintings, decorated with curtains and mirrors.

The villa with its accompanying park is a symbol of Opatija. Once a humble house of the sailor Matija Justij Katičić became the center of all social activities when the wealth of the Scarpa family transformed it. The Scarpas were rich shipowners and merchants from Rijeka whose hospitality was well known. In the following decades the villa changed ownership quite often. Count Viktor Chorinsky, The society of southern railroads and even health resorts to name a few called Villa Angiolina their own.

Villa Angiolina has three floors with a total area of ​​approximately 1000 m2. The representative ground floor is decorated with pillars, stucco, paintings and mirrors, and is an exhibit in itself. The first floor is functionally arranged as an exhibition space. The third floor has arranged working rooms for storage rooms, workshops, library.

Villa Angiolina is used as a principal space for cultural events, protocol needs and more.
